The 24-year-old, who was booed throughout after winning a dubious penalty in Bolton's 3-2 win here in March, struck a superb half volley into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box to reward fierce late pressure from Bolton, who are set to confirm the appointment of ex-Wolves striker Dougie Freedman as manager.

Davies' late effort ended Wolves' hopes of victory after it looked as if Kevin Doyle's brace on 27 and 29 minutes would return Stale Solbakken's side to winning ways.

Bolton took the lead through Benik Afobe in the 21st minute after awful defending from a corner.

But Wolves went on to control the rest of the half, playing some of their best attacking football of the season.

And yet they couldn't sustain it, failing to force a chance after the break as they retreated.

As expected, Solbakken made the one change from Saturday's line-up that lost 2-1 at Huddersfield, with captain Karl Henry returning in place of David Davis in central midfield.

Bolton fielded former Wolves midfielder Davies in the same position, while another ex-Molineux youth product, Keith Andrews, was on the bench.

In a stirring first half played in the Molineux mist and rain which made for a cracking surface, Bolton had the first real chance when Martin Petrov fizzed a 25-yarder a few feet wide after Tongo Doumbia had flashed a wild effort comfortably wide after being played in by Sako.

Henry was next to try his luck with a rare shot that forced keeper Adam Bogdan to parry diving to his left.

It was an even, open game but Bolton were first to strike when the unmarked Afobe was allowed time and space to control Petrov's corner before volleying low into the net from close range.

But Wolves, playing arguably their best attacking football of the season, were in no mood to surrender.

In a tale of two corners, Roger Johnson crashed a towering header against the top of the bar from Wolves' first flag-kick whipped in by Jermaine Pennant, who enjoyed a lively home debut.

Wolves fans didn't have long to wait for a reply – and a second goal quickly followed almost before fans had chance to take their seats again.

Sako threaded Doyle through in the inside left channel and the Ireland international took a touch before burying a left-foot shot that took a slight deflection before it went under keeper Bogdan.

Two minutes later, Doyle was in the right place at the right time to put Wolves in front.

Pennant won a free kick that led to it when he was tripped by Petrov.

Sako's curling free kick was only parried by Bogdan, and Doyle was on hand to head into the empty net.

It meant Doyle had trebled his Wolves tally for the season in three minutes.

And it proved the cue for some exciting football from the home side as Pennant, Sako and Doyle pretty much ran the show for the rest of the half.

Pennant saw a free kick parried away by Bogdan with Doyle scenting his hat-trick as he dashed in but couldn't connect.

But if the first half was thrilling, the second failed to match it for long spells, until the last 10 minutes.

Chris Eagles had Ikeme making a falling save on the hour from 20 yards.

But that was it until a frantic late siege from Bolton as they desperately chased an equaliser.

Ikeme made superb saves to deny Eagles from 25 yards then on-loan Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing from similar distance, Johnson injuring himself as he threw himself at the loose ball as half-time substitute David Ngog prepared to pounce.

But Ikeme was powerless to stop a left-footed half volley from Mark Davies, which rocketed into the top corner of the net to break Wolves' hearts.

And yet Bolton probably deserved a point for their late onslaught as Wolves retreated further back and had run out of steam.
