Kevin Doyle backs Wolves to win test of stamina

Kevin Doyle today insisted Wolves have the staying power for the Championship promotion fight.

Wolves are back at Molineux tomorrow for the second time in five days for the visit of Charlton after some critics questioned the fitness of their players after Tuesday's late equaliser by Bolton.

Mark Davies' last-minute leveller meant Stale Solbakken's side have thrown away seven points from winning positions at Molineux this season.

Wolves' players returned to training today ready to do battle again after being given yesterday off following a warm-down on Wednesday.

Doyle, who scored twice in midweek, believes Wolves' squad can cope with the slog of the Championship as they prepare for their third game in eight days.

"It's fine. We're all fit lads and it looks worse than it is," said the vice-captain. "When you're actually playing the games and involved in it, it becomes normal.

"It seemed like a long second half on Tuesday – they were gambling to get the equaliser and we were nervous trying to hold on so that resulted in them having a lot of pressure."

Doyle suggested the players are relishing the freedom of the Championship after three years of struggle in the Premier League.

"After three years of trying to stay up, it can take its toll – it's energy-sapping all the time as the team being dominated," he said.

"In the Premier League, every game was like the second half against Bolton – hoping to nick a win or a draw to get to the 40-point mark. So after three years of that, this is a tonic for a lot of us."

n Former Wolves midfielder Paul Cook, 45, has been appointed manager of League Two Chesterfield after leaving his post as Accrington boss.
