Huddersfield flying high ahead of Wolves visit

You wouldn't have had many people tipping Huddersfield to be the very early Championship pacesetters.

But the Terriers, rejuvenated under former Borussia Dortmund coach David Wagner, have made an impressive unbeaten start to the campaign.

Home wins over Barnsley and Brentford represent a great return.

But it's the away victory at Newcastle United and the 1-1 draw at Villa Park that have Town fans starting to believe they could be in and around the promotion mix this season.

Wagner took over from Chris Powell last November and, despite a few positive signs, struggled to implement his high-pressing tactics.

What's changed since last season is signings. Lots of them.

Ten transfers and four loans equate to a drastic overhaul and Wagner has very much stamped his mark on the playing squad.

Out have gone Ishmael Miller, James Vaughan and Joel Lynch.

In their place have mostly come overseas recruits, with four players from Germany including 24-year-old striker Elias Kachunga on loan and 1860 Munich centre-half Christopher Schindler for £1.8million.

Wagner also landed a coup when he signed highly-rated Southend midfielder Jack Payne – who Wolves had a look at.

And of course ex-Wolves man Rajiv van la Parra – unlikely to get a friendly ovation from the away end at the John Smith's Stadium – moved on a permanent deal.

Plenty of changes, then, but Wagner has got his new recruits clicking so far.

And according to one player who has stayed – midfielder Jonathan Hogg – fitness has proved crucial in their very early success.

Huddersfield have scored key goals in the final 11 minutes of each of their league games.

Hogg said: "We worked really hard throughout pre-season, and that's continued.

"The boss gave us two days off after the Barnsley game and that's unheard of.

"It's been a chance just to recharge the batteries, because things have been intense.

"We had two, sometimes three, sessions a day during pre-season. And then we have had five games in two weeks, as well as working on the training ground.

"The lads know it is paying off though, and we just want to keep plugging away.

"We're all getting used to squad rotation, and it helps keep us as fresh as possible."

Harry Bunn and Dean Whitehead have recently recovered from injury, although Sean Scannell (hip) was forced off at half time against Barnsley last weekend and Joe Lolley is a doubt with a foot injury.

Wolves beat Huddersfield 3-0 at Molineux last season but suffered a 1-0 reverse at the John Smith's Stadium in February.
