Wolves 'excited' with promotion challenge - Danny Batth
Danny Batth today insisted Wolves are "excited" about their promotion challenge as they close in on a return to the Championship.
Saturday's 2-0 win against Peterborough meant League One leaders Wolves are 12 points clear of third-placed Rotherham and a maximum of seven points away from clinching automatic promotion with five games left.
Ever-present Batth scored the first goal against Posh as Wolves kept a club record equalling 23rd clean sheet of the season in the league.
And the 23-year-old defender is relishing the battle at the top.
"We're excited about the situation we're in," said the Brierley Hill-born stopper.
"I think the style of football and togetherness we've shown this season has been there for all to see.
"Confidence has come with winning games and when you do that, and keep getting the right results, it means you know you can stick to your gameplan in trying to earn success."
And he also relished scoring in front of the South Bank as his header notched his second goal of the season after the 3-3 draw at Rotherham and his first at Molineux since the 2-2 stalemate against Leeds in February 2013.
"It's been a long time coming for me to get another goal, especially at home," he said.
"It fell to me nicely and I managed to put it away.
"I scored here last season which was a taster and to do it again in front of a good crowd was great for me on a personal note.
"It was important to get back to playing our football at home and using the size of the pitch to our advantage.
"Peterborough defended well in the first half and maybe we were a bit slow in possession at times and could have done more.
"But it was a very disciplined performance throughout and we got our reward in the end."
Batth was also delighted to have a share of that clean sheet record – especially against the division's 29-goal top scorer, Britt Assombalonga.
"Britt Assombalonga has done really well this season so myself and 'Stears' (Richard Stearman) were very pleased to keep him quiet," he said.
"Hopefully they'll go away thinking they've come up against a good defence."
Batth won automatic promotion from League One with Sheffield Wednesday two years ago and is loving how the fans have bought into the 'new Wolves'.
"I've been involved in a situation like this with Sheffield Wednesday while on loan and there was great support there," he said.
"But to see how the Wolves fans have responded has been great.
"When you see how many went to MK Dons, and then also filling the stand at Stevenage on a Tuesday night, it just shows the level of support we're getting."
