Dean Saunders hails Wolves' fighting spirit

Wolves boss Dean Saunders today hailed his side's spirit after they climbed out of the Championship drop-zone – but admitted the drop battle is turning him grey.

Last night's surprise 1-0 win over Hull – clinched by captain Kevin Doyle's 55th-minute winner – hoisted Saunders' side out of the bottom three ahead of Huddersfield on goal difference.

And Saunders challenged Wolves to end their season with three more victories after saluting their response to Saturday's 3-1 defeat to the Terriers.

He said: "I looked in the mirror in the morning and saw that I was getting grey hairs on my chest.

"I thought, 'I'm in trouble here!' But we scored a great goal at the right time. I was really proud of the players. They were brilliant and showed their mettle again.

"Saturday was a massive kick in the teeth but I said if the results reversed last night it would look different, and it did with Huddersfield losing."

A see-saw evening of high drama in the Championship saw Paul Coutts' 90th-minute equaliser for Derby deny Barnsley victory, while Huddersfield lost 1-0 at Blackburn to keep both sides below Wolves.

It means Wolves go to Charlton on Saturday with their destiny still in their own hands before hosting Burnley then travelling to Brighton.

Saunders said: "We're out of the bottom three with three games to go but we have still got a lot of work to do.

"We have got to try to win all three and then we're safe. It's in our hands and if we win the three, the teams below can't get above us.

"That's what we have got to aim for now instead of just thinking of getting a win and maybe a draw."

Jay Simpson missed a sitter and hit the post for Hull and Saunders admitted his side rode their luck at times.

Saunders said: "Things went for us with them hitting the post and then with other results – Derby getting a draw in injury-time against Barnsley.

"We defended for most of the game and we could have gone 2-0 up, but we didn't take our chances so there was always the chance they might have equalised."
