Blame me for Wolves' slump, says Stale Solbakken

Stale Solbakken today admitted he is to blame for Wolves' travel sickness after confessing: "I picked the wrong team".

In a brutally honest admission, the Wolves boss conceded he should have selected a more physical, less attack-minded side in some away games this season after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Watford saw the team slump to their fourth successive away loss.

Previously, three away wins without conceding convinced Solbakken they were on the right track but now he admits he was mistaken, with the team having been bullied at Leeds, Cardiff and Huddersfield.

"I had a really tough Sunday analysing what's gone wrong and I watched a lot of games on DVD," said the Norwegian.

"I thought we were on the right track when we went on that run and didn't let in any goals in three away games on the trot.

"But after the international break, we haven't really produced and that could be because I've chosen too offensive a side, or maybe a less physical line-up.

"I think the biggest chance of improving in the short term is to pick a more physical side, because I haven't picked a physical enough team in some games.

"I have to look myself in the mirror and say in some away games maybe I shouldn't have thought so much about the rhythm and continuity, but maybe we needed a more physical side, a more defensive side, or a counter-attacking side.

"That's something I'm going to have to look harder at. But we'd been on a very good run which I wanted to keep it going.

"We've had payback time for that. I have to hold my hands up and take responsibility – it's my job to put it right."

Solbakken believes he has the right players to pick a more physical team – but they're injured.

"At the moment, we've got half a team in the gym," he said. "In some away games, we've lacked the counter-attacking players.

"The best ones at that are Razak Boukari and Slawomir Peszko and so their absence has taken away the possibilities to change it."
