West Brom's pre-Black Country derby boost as starlet Harry Whitwell pens new contract

The Baggies have been boosted significantly ahead of Sunday’s showdown by the news that one of their top prospects has penned a contract extension.

Albion starlet Harry Whitwell is hungry for more after putting pen to paper on a new contract extension at The Hawthorns.

Academy graduate Whitwell, 20, has enjoyed a breakthrough few months in James Morrison’s first team.

The improved two-year deal extended his contract from the end of next season until 2029.

Attacking midfielder Whitwell, who has been with the Baggies since aged 11, has been around the first-team fold since 2024 but burst on to the scene in pre-season and took his form into the opening weeks of the campaign.

“West Bromwich Albion means so much to me,” Whitwell said after penning fresh terms. “I’ve seen the team evolve when I’ve been watching from afar, so being part of the first team now is a dream come true.

“I didn’t have much Championship experience before this season, but thanks to the gaffer and his coaching team, I’ve taken a lot of steps forward in my development.

“Knowing I’m here for the long term makes me feel over the moon and I can’t wait to see how far this team can go.

“I’m really excited for the future because we're heading in the right direction. We’ve started the season really well and long may it continue.”

Whitwell is pushing for a starting role in Sunday’s Black Country derby at Wolves. He was an unused substitute in the infamous FA Cup derby of 2024.

Head coach Morrison has been a big supporter of Whitwell and has helped the youngster flourish. The Scot was a coach of the midfielder at youth team level and has worked closely during his development.

Whitwell spent the first half of last season on loan at Forest Green in the National League, where the Baggies starlet credits some of his rise.
