West Brom starlet Jimmy-Jay Morgan lands EFL award after stunning start to season

The attacker became the first player in the top four divisions to chalk up six goal involvements so far this season.

Albion starlet Jimmy-Jay Morgan has been awarded the English Football League’s young player of the season for August.

The 20-year-old forward has enjoyed a stunning start to life at The Hawthorns.

Morgan, a £1.3million summer signing from Chelsea, this week became the first player in any of the top four divisions to register six goal involvements for the new season - four goals and two assists - after he laid on Aune Heggebo’s winner at Derby.

He was presented with the trophy as the standout young player across the EFL’s three divisions this week after three goals and two assists in five league fixtures in August.

Morgan admitted he goes into games expecting to score or create for his new club. He said: “It’s really nice to win this award and get noticed for the work I’m doing.

“I’m in a state of mind at the minute where I’m disappointed coming away from games if I haven’t scored.

“I’m going into every game expecting to score, assist or create chances for the team, and it’s probably justice to the rest of the team, to be honest. They create the chances that I’m able to put away.

“I like to think I’m quite a versatile player. I think I drift into different spaces during games and try to create space for other people as well. But obviously, my trade is to score goals, so I also know that I’ve got to arrive in the box at the right times.”

Morgan bagged 14 goals in 36 games on loan at Peterborough in League One last term and has taken to the step up with James Morrison’s Baggies in some style.

Morrison said: “It’s fully deserved with his performances.

“I loved how he aggressive he was without the ball against Watford. I challenged him and he showed me a reaction. He’s played a lot of football over the last few weeks. It’s about consistent performances for the the team and individually.

“I think his attributes suit the Championship and he’s a threat on goal. That’s what we’ve been missing.”
