But the 28-year-old was pictured returning to training last week.

And he has now got some competitive minutes under his belt after playing for an hour against Newcastle in PL2.

Hegazi lined up in a back three alongside Jack Fitzwater and Dara O’Shea

Albion also included Ali Al-Habsi, Chris Brunt, Rekeem Harper, Chris Willock, Kyle Edwards and Hal Robson-Kanu in a strong starting XI.

The Baggies created several chances in the first half with Hegazi headeing Brunt corner over before Edwards twice went close.

And they opened the scoring just after the interval with Robson-Kanu producing a neat finish after being teed up by Edwards.

Tom Allan equalised for Newcastle from the penalty spot after Jack Fitzwater was deemed to have fouled Jack Young.

But Albion went on to win the clash thanks to another goal from Robson-Kanu.
