Albion's disastrous double-header in Devon came to an embarrassing end with defeat at non-league Torquay United.[gallery]

Two wonderful solo goals in the space of six minutes condemned the Baggies at Plainmoor, who didn't get going until the last half an hour.

Left-back Callum Hall started the fireworks in the 52nd minute with a rasping 25-yard drive that swerved inside Ben Foster's far post.

Six minutes later striker Brett Williams put the Devon outfit on cloud nine with a cool finish after a brilliant turn and run from the half-way line.

Matt Phillips scored his first goal for the Baggies with 10 minutes to go after a raking long ball from Darren Fletcher and some impressive ball juggling.

But it was too little too late for Albion who were undone in non-league weather by a non-league team.

The defeat came two days after a drab goalless draw at League Two Plymouth Argyle, suggesting this team still has plenty of work to do before the season starts in under a fortnight.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis says results don't matter in pre-season, but performances certainly do, and the simple fact is neither showing over the past few days has been acceptable.

Craig Gardner curled Albion's first opportunity just over the bar after a sweeping move involving Sam Field, a James Morrison through-ball and a James McClean pull-back.

In fact, it was the deep-lying Field who was making Albion tick in the early stages, evading tackles with confidence and ease.

Young Kane Wilson was bombing up the left-wing but the hosts were growing into the game.

Jamie Reid turned Jonny Evans in the box before getting crowded out and former Kidderminster Harrier Nathan Blissett nearly bustled his way through on goal.

Evans was called into a goal-saving block halfway through the first period when the ball bounced to Dan Sparkes in the box and Torquay trialist Ronald Huth was impressing at centre-half, spraying glorious raking passes from the back.

Albion were probing when they had possession but they were unable to get in behind the non-league defence, and it was the three teenagers who were showing up their senior counterparts.

The closest the Premier League side came to scoring in the first half was a long-range curling effort from 17-year-old Jonathan Leko from the edge of the area that Brendan Moore had to tip behind at full stretch.

It was the non-league side who were creating the better chances, and moments later Aman Verma's first time whipped cross found the unmarked Reid at the back post, but he hit the side netting with a diving header.

The striker had another free header in the box just before half-time but this time the cross was just too high for him.

Despite their impressive first-half Torquay's player-manager Kevin Nicholson made wholesale changes at half-time, while Pulis brought on four new faces.

But Nicholson's changes proved inspired because left-back Hall smacked an unstoppable 25-yard screamer past Foster into the far post on the 52nd minute to give the non-league side a deserved lead.

Things went from bad to worse for Albion six minutes later when Torquay scored another superb solo goal.

The ball was cleared to Williams on the halfway line and the big striker turned Dawson with ease before outpacing Jonas Olsson and expertly placing his shot into the bottom corner.

"Premier League, you're having a laugh," rang around Plainmoor, and there were probably Albion fans joining in.

Dawson was obviously keen to make up for his error, and he smacked the bar with a header minutes later, but the Baggies were only really threatening from set pieces.

Pulis threw Phillips on soon after and the summer signing made an immediate impact, skimming the bar with a blistering long-range effort.

And he picked up his first Albion goal 10 minutes before the end with some impressive ball juggling and a consummate finish.

Albion kept banging on the door as Torquay's legs gave way but Morrison blazed a chance over from eight yards out with two minutes to go and Saido Berahino struggled to reach a through-ball that he should have caught up with.
