Former West Brom full-back undergoing medical ahead of return to The Hawthorns

The left-back is to return to The Hawthorns two years after his departure.

Conor Townsend is undergoing a medical at Albion ahead of a return to the club.

The left-back left the club in 2024 after a six-year spell at The Hawthorns, where he clocked up more than 200 appearances.

He moved to Ipswich Town in a £750,000 deal and made 10 appearances over two seasons at the Tractor Boys, the first of which was in the Premier League, before last season was disrupted by an ACL injury during a pre-season friendly.

Townsend, 33, is undergoing a medical at Albion ahead of his return and is poised to sign a one-year deal on a free transfer.

He was released by Ipswich this summer after Ipswich sealed a return to the Premier League.

The left-back is well known to head coach James Morrison, who was a coach for the most part of Townsend’s time at the club and the duo were briefly team-mates when Townsend first arrived in 2018.

Albion believe Townsend will add valuable experience and knowhow to a dressing room that has seen younger, hungry new recruits added in recent windows, as well as earlier this summer.

The experienced defender turns 34 this season, but fits the bill for the Baggies as they hunt left-back cover for star man Callum Styles.

Styles was Albion’s double player of the season last term but the club currently lack any senior cover in that department. The Hungary international missed one league fixture last season.

Charlie Taylor did the role on loan from Southampton last term.

Townsend will be the Baggies’ fifth summer recruit after forward pair Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Barney Stewart, defender Carter Pinnington and goalkeeper Matt Ingram.
