West Brom defender Nicky Shorey today welcomed the club's pursuit of fellow left-back Liam Ridgewell as the Baggies prepare to step up the chase.

Albion are ready to intensify talks over the Birmingham man as they target a deal ahead of Tuesday's transfer deadline.

And current left-back Shorey insisted Ridgewell would be a welcome addition, even though the 27-year-old would be a threat to his starting place.

Shorey said: "It wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

"We want to build a squad here and he looks like he could be a good addition.

"If the gaffer was to sign him, it would be great for the club and it's never really bothered me when people try to sign players in my position. Throughout your career, from 18 to 30, you're fighting for your place.

"Whatever club you are at there are always other people waiting to step in. That's just the way football is."

Albion have had two bids for Ridgewell turned down by Blues, but the clubs remain in discussions and hope they can strike a deal.

Ridgewell has made it clear he wants to leave St Andrew's and Blues are willing to sell at the right price.

Fulham defender Chris Baird also remains of interest to Albion after they made a failed loan bid in August, but Cottagers boss Martin Jol insists he has no plans to offload the Northern Ireland international.
