Goal hero urges West Brom to keep fighting as survival battle heats up

Campbell and his team-mates were given a warm reception following the final whistle, seven days after being booed off after a dire defeat at Oxford.

The USA international reckons players have now set the standard for the effort required over the run-in.

He said: “At Oxford, we kind of gave up at the end of the game as a collective. 

“Well, maybe not gave up, but we allowed our heads to drop too much. 

“On Saturday, we really fought and scrapped to get back in the game. That was the difference and we are going to need that for the final 10 matches of the season.”

Campbell epitomised Albion’s desire as he picked himself off the floor, after diverting Gustavo Hamer’s cross into his own net, to slam home the 83rd minute leveller, becoming the first Albion player since Semi Ajayi six years ago to score at both ends of the pitch.

The giant centre-back thanked team-mates for lifting his spirits, explaining: “They helped me personally through it.

“I thought I was having a somewhat solid game so tried not to let it (the own goal) affect me. 

“Obviously, mistakes happen and did today. We are going to need that from everyone to encourage us through the bad moments, making sure we stick together.”

Interim boss Morrison later revealed he had wanted Campbell to pass when he took possession 30 yards from goal.

Instead, he advanced before firing in just the fifth goal of his senior career and first from outside the box.

Campbell said: “I’ve been hitting them well for a few weeks in training, though you’d have to ask the other guys about that!

“I was just concentrating on getting my first touch right. The ball fell pretty close to my feet, so I was just thinking of getting it out and on to my right foot. 

“After that, I put my head down, put my laces through it and got it on target. After the first touch, that was all that was on my mind.

“There had been a few corners before, after the own goal, where all I was thinking right after was trying to help the team back in it. 

“It was the first own goal of my career. All I was thinking about was getting my team back into it. The ball fell right for me.”

Albion, who will drop back into the bottom three if Leicester avoid defeat at home to Bristol City on Tuesday, host Southampton on Wednesday in the first of back-to-back home matches.

Hull visit The Hawthorns on Saturday and Campbell said: “There are 10 games to go and it is our job to give ourselves a goal, as Mozza said, a target to pick up points and which games we can really go for. 

“We want to make sure all the home games we go for wins. 

“We need to get moving and it needs to start now, especially after a point at a tough place like Bramall Lane. With two home games, it is the perfect time to pick up momentum.”
