Walsall FC 1 Shrewsbury Town 0 - match report

[gallery] Craig Westcarr scored the only goal and was later sent off for an apparent head butt as Walsall made it back-to-back wins and increased the heat on struggling Shrewsbury.

The 29-year-old bagged his 15th of the season when his shot from the edge of the box beat visiting keeper Joe Anyon.

But his game ended on a sour note when he was dismissed midway through the second period for appearing to head butt Town's Sam Foley.

The visitors had earlier had Joe Mills sent-off for a two-footed challenge on James Chambers. Their best chance fell to defender Connor Goldson but he fired over from six yards out.

Victory moved the Saddlers to within two points of sixth place but they face the prospect of losing Westcarr for three games after his needless dismissal. Defeat leaves Town mired in the drop zone.

Dean Smith made just one, enforced, change to the Saddlers side which beat Bradford 2-0 on Tuesday as James Baxendale replaced the injured Milan Lalkovic.

For Shrewsbury there were four changes and a first senior start for Wolves loanee Dominic Iorfa, who came in for the injured Jermaine Grandison. There were also returns for Ryan Woods, Joe Jacobson and Aaron Wildig, with Jon Taylor and Paul Parry dropping to the bench and Tom Eaves missing out entirely.

Westcarr had scored both goals at Bradford to end a 10 game scoring drought and took just five minutes to break the deadlock. His shot from the edge of the box seemed to take a slight deflection on its way past Anyon.

The visitors should have levelled immediately but Goldson skied a great chance over from six yards out after Mills' corner had missed everyone in the box.

After the early flurry the first half was a rather sedate affair though it was certainly the Saddlers who were looking most dangerous in attack and Baxendale shot wide after a strong run through the middle.

Five minutes before half-time, Westcarr came within inches of a second when after a long spell of patient possession he turned and drove a shot off the post from the edge of the box. On the stroke of half-time Anyon was forced into action when he pushed away a curling Andy Taylor free-kick.

Aside from Joe Jacobson and Asa Hall shots which sailed wide, Town offered very little going forward.

It was the Saddlers who continued to make the running early in the second period and Andy Butler put an effort wide from six yards out after stretching to meet a Baxendale cross.

With half-an-hour to go the visitors task got harder when Mills was shown a straight red card after diving into a challenge on Chambers.

Anyon saved a Sawyers header from close range and then brilliantly denied Febian Brandy when he pushed the Saddlers winger's drive from 12 yards out over the bar.

Soon after it wasthe Saddlers turn to be reduced to ten men, albeit in incredibly bizarre circumstances. Westcarr was fouled by Jacobson and, while he was receiving treatment on the floor, suddenly jumped up and stuck his face in Foley's. Referee Robert Madley had no option but to show him a straight red card.

It was an incident which did not alter the course of the game as the Saddlers still looked the brighter and Anyon denied Baxendale after another fine move from the hosts set the winger up with a clear strike at goal. Brandy saw a shot deflected wide after he had gone through, while Town failed to muster a clear cut chance in the second half.
