Walsall debrief: Saddlers buckle under pressure as mistakes sting
The key talking points from the Saddlers’ defeat at Swindon.
Walsall were left six points adrift of the League Two play-offs after falling to a costly 2-1 defeat against Swindon Town at the County Ground on Easter Monday.
Jamie Jellis opened the scoring midway into the second half with his first goal since February 2025, before fellow substitute Fletcher Holman equalised nine minutes from time.
And Swindon completed the comeback in stoppage time when Aaron Drinan tapped in from close-range.
Here are the key talking points from the defeat.
Crumbling under pressure
Walsall are fast becoming football’s ultimate nearly men. Last season created that reputation and this season has only reinforced it.
Twice they have sat atop of the table at Christmas and it almost appears a foregone conclusion that they will miss out on promotion on both occasions.
With how results elsewhere have transpired, had Walsall emerged with wins over Colchester United, Gillingham and Swindon then they would now be nestled in the play-off spots.
Instead, they collected just two points from a possible nine and are now a staggering 500/1 to sneak into the play-offs.
The most disappointing aspect is that Walsall led in all three games but failed to win any of them.
Admittedly, the damage had been done long before Byfield’s instalment as interim head coach, but when the opportunity was still within their grasp, they let it slip through their fingers.
Mistakes, mistakes

Byfield was brutal with his selection and perhaps the seven changes went too far in that respect.
Connor Barrett settled into the contest on his first start in two months, but was struck by cramp in the latter stages.
Vincent Harper replaced him as a result and immediately failed to deal with a long throw forward from Swindon goalkeeper Connor Ripley.
Fletcher Holman pounced and arrowed his finish into the far corner to get Swindon back on level terms.
Harper admirably apologised for his error on social media afterwards, but it ultimately provided the hosts with a springboard to win the game.
And that moment came when Aden Flint stopped in his tracks to raise his hand for a flag that never came.
Drinan did look offside from the naked eye, but replays suggest that he was in line with Flint when the initial ball was played through.
What followed was elementary defending, as Holman played to the whistle and squared for Drinan to score his 21st goal of the season.
Mistakes were also costly three days earlier when a mix-up between Myles Roberts and Priestley Farquharson gifted Seb Palmer-Houlden with Gillingham’s second goal.
Even the nature of the first was disappointing, as Ronan Hale broke through with ease to equalise for the Gills.
JJ back on the score sheet

Despite the result, Jellis was at least able to end his 14-month goal drought when he steered a finish into the far corner in the 64th-minute.
Walsall looked poised to secure maximum points at that stage until a late collapse ultimately condemned them to a costly defeat.
As for Jellis, it has been a difficult season for the midfielder both on and off the pitch.
With his contract set to expire at the end of this season, Jellis was be among many playing for a new deal, and hopefully his goal will provide him with a much-needed boost.
