Darren Byfield has confirmed that Walsall midfielder Alex Pattison will go for a scan on a hamstring injury on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was forced off in the 39th-minute during the Saddlers’ 2-2 draw against Gillingham at Bescot on Good Friday.

Pattison was among seven players to drop out in their 2-1 defeat against Swindon in Wiltshire on Easter Monday and Byfield has suggested he will know more about the severity of the injury later in the week.

“He’ll have the scan on Tuesday and then we’ll know a lot more then,” interim head coach Byfield confirmed.

“It is a hamstring injury. We changed how we do things today in terms of attacking teams purely because we miss that power and quality that he has.

“So we tried something different and I was delighted with how the boys implemented it as well but I keep going back to two individual mistakes.”

The midfielder has made 17 appearances in all competitions for Walsall since completing his January switch from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee.

Pattison scored his first goal for the club with a dramatic long-range winner in the 97th-minute against Newport County at Bescot on March 21.

He has also weighed in with three assists in total and was replaced by Alfie Chang, who also returned permanently following his departure from Birmingham City during the winter.

Chang played for 64 minutes until he was forced off with a knee issue, as Jamie Jellis scored the opener with his first goal in almost 14 months.

However, late goals from Fletcher Holman and Aaron Drinan condemned Walsall to their first defeat under Byfield to leave them six points adrift of the League Two play-offs.

On Chang, Byfield added: “He hurt his knee in a tackle so we will have to look at him and see how he is.”
