Lee Grant highlights ideal transfer scenario for Walsall this summer

Grant has provided an update on Walsall’s transfer business this summer.

New head coach Lee Grant says he ideally wants “two players for every position” at Walsall next season.

Walsall have made five signings in total so far this summer: Andrew Dallas, Lewis Simper, Sven Sprangler, James Connolly and Isaac Moore (on loan).

The summer overhaul has come following the release of 12 players coupled with the departures of Connor Barrett and Sam Hornby to Wigan Athletic and Hednesford Town respectively.

When asked for an update on the Saddlers’ transfer business, Grant told the club: “We have five in the door. Just simple maths tells you that we’ve still got a fair way to go.

‘We’ve still got a long way to go’ - Grant on Walsall’s summer rebuild

“If we’ve released 13 or 14 players [12 released, two departures] and bought five in then we’ve still got a good chunk of our squad to fill.

“We’ve got a long way to go still. So the next steps, we need more players in, which is the simple answer to that question.

“Ideally as head coach, I want to have two players competing for every spot and to have really viable options in each position.

“We’re building our way towards that. We have to be mindful that we don’t have every resource going that we can just be really scattergun in our approach.

“We have to be really targeted and creative in some areas of course, and we have to work incredibly hard.”
