Walsall "must learn" from the disappointment of this season - Darren Byfield
Byfield reflected on the Saddlers’ 3-1 defeat at League Two champions Bromley on the final day.
Darren Byfield insists Walsall “must learn” from this season after they ended the campaign with a 3-1 defeat at League Two champions Bromley.
Ben Thompson’s 20-yard stunner opened the scoring during the first half, before Mitch Pinnock beat Myles Roberts with a low drive on the hour.
Jid Okeke halved the deficit momentarily with a close-range finish, but Omar Sowumni quickly restored the Ravens’ two-goal cushion.
As a result, Walsall slipped into 13th-place in League Two following Colchester United’s 4-1 victory at Cheltenham Town.
‘We must learn from this season’ - Byfield
On the defeat, Byfield said: “We knew it would be a tough time. They’ve ended up as champions and deservedly so.
“They’re a team that’s relentless and they don’t give you a minute’s peace.

“The boys gave their all again but unfortunately we conceded three goals and we didn’t defend that well with it.
“But I can’t ever question their effort. We just have to make sure that we learn from this season and keep trying to improve.”
That defeat brought the curtain down on Byfield’s 10-game spell as interim head coach, which heralded three wins, three draws and four losses.
‘We have to be better in both boxes’
“Of course they were [disappointing],” he added on the goals conceded.
“You look at the saves Myles made in the game and they were unbelievable.
“He missed one, but it’s just one where we have to make sure that we learn from these things.
“It hasn’t been the season that we all wanted and it there was frustration because we had some chances.
“But we have to be better in both boxes and it’s as simple as that.”
