Darren Byfield still unsure over his future as Walsall head coach decision looms

Darren Byfield oversaw a 3-1 defeat at Bromley in his final game as Walsall interim head coach.

Darren Byfield says he doesn’t know what his future holds after Walsall lost 3-1 at Bromley in his final game as interim head coach.

The 49-year-old took charge of his final game as interim head coach after 10 games in the dugout.

His spell heralded three wins, three draws and four defeats and it remains to be seen who will be elected as Mat Sadler’s permanent successor in the dugout.

‘What will be, will be’ - Byfield on his Walsall future

On his future, Byfield said: “The most important thing is Walsall Football Club are a team that are challenging next season.

“We know there’s going to be a lot of work that’s needed and done throughout the summer.

“The head coach implementing the success that’s needed for the football club and challenging them every day.

“When the time comes for it to be announced, I’m sure they would’ve spoken to me and what will be, will be.

“Regardless of what happens, we just need Walsall to be a successful football club once again.”

The Saddlers sat top of League Two at Christmas, but succumbed to a 13th-place finish, after Colchester United beat Cheltenham Town 4-1 to climb above them.

Walsall also had to watch on as opponents Bromley lifted the title in just their second season in League Two.

In total, Walsall have lost 12 of their last 24 league games, which has seen them rapidly plummet down the table over the past four months.

And Byfield says regardless of what happens concerning his future, that the club will always remain close to his heart.

“No I don’t know anything if I’m being honest. It’s one where we will find out,” he added.

“Whatever happens, I think the football club know how close they are to my heart.

“I’m really proud that I’ve been able to lead these group of players.

“Obviously we fell short and we can’t afford for that to happen again.

“We’ve got to instil a winning culture.”
