Walsall strengthen options at the back
Walsall boss Jon Whitney admits he is pleased with his defensive options after completing a double swoop for Eoghan O'Connell and Scott Laird.
The Saddlers beat off competition from a number of League One clubs as well as Kilmarnock to sign O'Connell on loan from Celtic until the end of the season.
Laird has also agreed a similar deal after initially joining on a six-month loan from Scunthorpe back in January.
"When you think back to a week ago, the defence is now looking a lot stronger." Whitney said.
"We have got Eoghan and Lairdy who will strengthen that back line.
"I have to give a special mention to Jimmy (O'Connor), Matty (Preston) and Kory (Roberts).
"It's not in any way a negative for them. We just need a bit of strength in depth. Once the January transfer window ends, that is our squad until the end of the season. We have got to make sure we have cover at the back."
Laird, who scored three goals in 22 appearances during his first loan spell, has quickly become a fans favourite at the Banks's Stadium.
And the left-back admitted he is delighted to return.
"I'm absolutely delighted to get it done ahead of a big game against Sheffield United," he said.
"I can't thank the fans enough for how they've taken to me.
"I had some big boots to fill when Rico Henry left, but I'd like to think I've done enough and I'm looking forward to cracking on in the second half of the season."
Meanwhile, Celtic starlet O'Connell said the lure of first-team football was key to his move to Walsall.
"I'm really looking forward to getting started," he said.
"It's been a strange season for me because I was playing for Celtic at the start of the year but I've not played as much recently.
"I wanted to get out and play and now I'm really excited to be here."
