Skipper Andy Butler today insisted he holds the key to Walsall's survival hopes after discovering their lucky charm.

Wife Caroline bought him a four leaf clover keyring to halt the Saddlers' wretched luck before he scored in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Stevenage.

It couldn't inspire victory but Butler said every little helps in battle to beat the League One drop.

"The missus gave me a little four leaf clover keyring before the game so that's the luck we need," said the four-goal defender.

"After the Sheffield Wednesday game she thought we needed a bit of luck so went on eBay and bought it. It just helps with the routine and getting you ready, it's silly but it's a way to concentrate on the game and get into game mode. I'm not overly superstitious though.

"I scored and looked at my wife in the crowd and she's like 'it's the four leaf clover'. My little boy (Ashton) was there too. He's a good luck charm and I've never lost when he's been there. He's coming tomorrow as well.

"You work hard and luck comes. We'll keep working hard on the training pitch and we've got nine games left to make our own luck."

The point wasn't enough to lift the Saddlers out of League One's bottom four after Wycombe's late leveller in their 1-1 draw with MK Dons.

Walsall host Colchester in their game in hand tomorrow knowing a draw will take them out of the drop zone and Butler insisted they will shake off Saturday's disappointment.

"A point is a point and it's a big game tomorrow," he said. "It's another point for us and in the direction we need to go. It was another unfortunate goal on Saturday – they are either deflected or go in the top corner every week.

"That's the only way they were going to score because we defended really well. We'll brush ourselves off and get ready for tomorrow."
