Walsall boss Dean Smith today tipped David Grof to become Jimmy Walker's long-term replacement.

The Banks's Stadium chief reckons rookie keeper Grof can eventually succeed Saddlers legend Walker – who is just 11 games from equalling the club's appearance record.

Grof is likely to keep his spot for tomorrow's visit of Bury after impressing in the 1-1 draws at Huddersfield and Exeter.

He deputised for his suspended rival at the Galpharm before retaining his place at Exeter, despite the veteran's availability, and Smith insisted the 22-year-old can take over.

"I hope so, I wouldn't have brought him in if I didn't think so. He's learning from Wacka and he wants to push him all the way which is great competition," he said. "He's young, hungry and if he keeps performing as he has done then there are a lot of plusses."
