The Terriers equalled Nottingham Forest's Football League record of 42 games unbeaten after Saturday's 1-1 draw, which kept the Saddlers out of the League One drop zone.
Smith hailed his team after they held the second-placed Terriers. He said: "I said to the lads before the game that the only other teams who had worse odds than us were the teams going to Manchester United (Sunderland) and Arsenal (Albion) and that was a challenge in itself.
"No-one else from the outside fancied us getting anything so they could stand up and be counted. That's the standard we need. We knew there was a big challenge."
