Walsall winger Kevan Hurst today revealed the reason for his penalty blunder and told of how it was the maiden miss of his career.
Hurst's spot kick was saved by Rochdale goalkeeper Jake Kean as the Saddlers crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 3-1 on penalties last night.
Substitute Hurst equalised with his first touch at Spotland as the game finished 1-1 in normal time before he, Richard Taundry and Ryan Jarvis all missed from the spot.
And the 26-year-old admitted he committed the cardinal sin of changing his mind during his run up – going left instead of right.
He said: "I've never missed a penalty and I'm quite disappointed with myself. The one rule in penalties is pick your corner and stay with it but I changed my mind at the last second.
"I'm gutted about it but you have to move on and take the positives. I was disappointed with the penalty miss but also happy to come on and score a goal."
