David Martin today revealed his whirlwind Walsall switch caught him by surprise but vowed to repay manager Dean Smith.

The new-boy made his debut in last night's 1-0 defeat to Oldham just hours after signing on a month's loan from Derby County.

The winger hadn't even trained with the Saddlers before making his bow as Walsall slipped to a third straight defeat and told of how his late dash to the Banks's came out of the blue.

He said: "It was all last minute, I got the call on Monday night and I was sitting around the Derby training ground all day yesterday waiting for something to happen.

"Eventually it finally did but it was difficult to get my head round. I did my best and hopefully I can kick on for Saturday against Scunthorpe.

"I've been out with injury a bit and I played my first 90 minutes in the reserves last week – and that was against Walsall – so I was happy just to get the minutes under my belt.

"The gaffer has told me to just enjoy my football, he knows what I can do and I just want to try my best for him and Walsall."
