Walsall boss Dean Smith has insisted he has yet to pick his team for the Saddlers' League One season opener on Saturday.

The Saddlers drew 1-1 at Port Vale on Saturday and Smith will use the week to fine tune his plans ahead of the clash with Leyton Orient.

John McCombe's own goal cancelled out Sean Rigg's first-half opener on Saturday and Smith will now select his team 48 hours before Orient's visit.

He said: "I won't be picking my team until Thursday. There is still a week's training and probably another behind-closed-doors friendly, so I'm not going to make my mind up just yet.

"Saturday was a good test and I was pleased with the way we moved the ball, particularly in the first half when we created quite a few chances.

"The game wilted in the sun a bit as the second half wore on, but that was likely to happen and, apart from conceding a poor goal, I was happy with how it went."

The Saddlers fell behind after just eight minutes when Marc Richards' header found Rigg, who smashed the ball in.

Jon Macken and Claude Gnakpa went close as the visitors responded, before Vale goalkeeper Chris Martin kept out Kevan Hurst's free-kick.

The Saddlers eventually levelled on the hour when substitute goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson pushed Will Grigg's low cross straight into McCombe, who diverted it into his own net from two yards.
