Walsall manager Dean Smith is eyeing two more signings before the pre-season overtures are completed for the League One opener against Leyton Orient.

Smith is today assessing the messages from two tough friendlies in three days against Premier League neighbours Wolves and Villa, which stretched his squad but gave the club's hard-pressed coffers a healthy pre-season bonus.

The Saddlers boss was due to pass verdict on midfield triallist Anton Peterlin, a second-half substitute in last night's 3-1 reverse against Villa, before making further plans to add to his seven new signings already this summer.

But the manager still has room to manoeuvre in his budget to strengthen his squad as he sticks to his policy of aiming high in the build up to the new campaign, which gets underway at the Banks's Stadium on August 6.

He said: "There's possibly two more deals to be done. I'm still looking to strengthen central midfield, although I felt Adam Chambers and Richard Taundry performed very well against Villa."
