Walsall ace Darryl Westlake today vowed to be boss Dean Smith's Mr Right and win his battle with new-boy Lee Beevers.

The right-back is ready for the fight with the former Lincoln ace after Beevers penned a one-year deal with the Saddlers this week.

Beevers started last night's 0-0 draw at Gretna 2008 FC as the Saddlers wrapped up their Scottish tour and was a second-half substitute in Wednesday's 2-0 win at Greenock Morton.

Former Colchester defender Beevers is eyeing the right-back slot but Westlake, who came on at the break last night, insisted he won't give it up without a fight.

"It's a contest between me and him and I'm ready," said the 20-year-old. "I've had challenges with Rhys Weston in my first season and last year with Aaron Lescott but I've played a lot of games despite being young so I feel ready for it.

"I'm at the age where I want to cement my place. I knew the gaffer was gong to bring in a new right-back but it's down to me to keep my place."
