Dean Smith today urged Walsall's frustrated fans to reunite and help the Saddlers' basement battle.

They host promotion-chasing Huddersfield tomorrow knowing a win would keep them in touch with League One safety.

Caretaker manager Smith has won two points from draws against Tranmere and Bristol Rovers since taking over from the axed Chris Hutchings last week.

And, ahead of his home bow as boss, Smith wants the supporters to give the Saddlers an edge.

"The important thing is we all stick together," he said,

"The fans are important in this and the most important thing is Walsall Football Club. The supporters want to stay in this league, the players want to stay in this league and the management do too.

"There has been a change at the club, albeit on a caretaker basis, and we've had two positive performances and results. We haven't had the three points but I believe the supporters who have travelled will have noticed a difference and hopefully they can get behind us tomorrow."

The second-bottom Saddlers are hunting their first home win since a 2-1 victory over Carlisle on November 20 — having won just four times at home this season.

And Smith is eager to fix the Banks's Stadium woes but knows the players must improve. He said: "I think we've been a little bit complacent at times. I've seen us play really well against Exeter and Carlisle and then saw the Notts County performance.

"There hasn't been that consistency from the players at home. I've just had two games where I've seen the consistency level we need if we're going to get out of the position we're in.

"We need to take it into the game tomorrow, we can't have too many highs or low, we need to find that medium."
