Walsall have remained tight-lipped over manager Chris Hutchings' future – but have pledged cash for new players ahead of Saturday's crunch clash with Exeter.

The Saddlers have crashed to the bottom of League One after the weekend's wretched 1-0 defeat to Yeovil and are three points from safety.

They have lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions and pressure is mounting on Hutchings after a woeful start to the season.

The club released a statement today but failed to address the position of the manager, although insisted they will back him with cash.

Chief executive Stefan Gamble said: "Obviously we are all extremely disappointed with our start to the season, no-one more so than Chris and the rest of the backroom team.

"We know that the results simply haven't been good enough, but we are all working hard behind the scenes to turn things around.

"Funds are available to bring in a couple of new faces in order to freshen things up on the playing side and we hope to have some new blood on board before Saturday's fixture against Exeter City.

"The supporters have been very patient and, for that, we thank them. However, we all know that the best way to show our appreciation is by getting results on the pitch.

"We are determined to turn this season around."
