Hednesford Town snap up Bolton striker David Abimbola ahead of new season

The Pitmen have signed another player from the EFL as their season opener nears.

Hednesford Town have bolstered their attacking options with another eye-catching signing ahead of the new season.

The Pitmen have completed the signing of young forward David Abimbola from Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old striker signed his first professional contract with the Championship outfit last summer before penning an extended deal in January.

Abimbola made four League One appearances for Bolton last season before spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Accrington Stanley, where he featured 11 times in League Two.

He now arrives at Keys Park as another statement signing in the club’s ambitious summer rebuild ahead of the National League North campaign, which gets under way this weekend.

Upon signing, Abimbola said “I’m delighted to be here. I was invited down to the game on Saturday and after watching that game, I knew it was the right decision to come here.

“The goals that the club want to reach are brilliant and I think it’s the right club for my development too.”

After a prolific 2024/25 season, in which he helped Bolton’s under-18s win the EFL Youth Alliance and Lancashire FA Youth Cup, Abimbola was promoted to the first-team squad.

The powerful frontman was handed his opportunity by boss Steven Schumacher during an injury-hit spell, making his full debut against Lincoln City.

The 19-year-old reunites with Sonny Sharples-Ahmed at Hednesford after his former Bolton team-mate also made the move to Keys Park earlier this summer.

Reflecting on his journey, the Pitmen’s new striker said: “I signed for Bolton when I was 16, and I was there all the way until now.

“I made my debut and had a loan at Accrington which was a good experience. Now I am here, ready to carry on and push on.”

Abimbola will be hoping to help fire Hednesford towards the top of the league standings as they bid for a third successive promotion.

“I would say I am an aggressive and powerful player,” the 19-year-old added.

“He (boss Kelvin Davis) said just come here and be a handful, play with freedom. I feel like this is the place where I can do that.

He added on his and the Pitmen’s goals for the season: “Just score as many goals that I can for the team and the club. Have a good season and hopefully get promoted.”
