Walsall Wood's Wembley dream still alive
Walsall Wood's Wembley dream lived on tonight as they earned an FA Vase quarter final replay against Guernsey.
Mark Swann's side enjoyed the better of the chances and should have gone through against the Channel Islanders, but had to settle for a goalless draw after extra time.
Watched by a partisan crowd of 656 - which included 200 from Guernsey - Wood showed remarkable reserves of fitness on an Oak Park pitch that cut up in the later stages and were the better side as the game wore on.
Striker Ahmet Bilgimer was denied by a superb save from 'keeper Chris Tardif when he tried to pick his spot in the 97th minute before Shawn Boothe was a fraction away from converting Jamie Hawkins' free kick six minutes later.
Prior to that Bilgimer again found himself clean through with only Tardif to beat, but after lifting his shot over the 'keeper, Alex Le Prevost to kick the ball off the line.
But Guernsey missed two golden chances to snatch victory at the death when prolific striker Ross Allen put through Dave Rihoy and his shot crashed off the underside of the bar with Dominic Heaume to blaze over on the rebound with an open goal at his mercy.
Bilgimer missed another chance after that, failing to get enough of a connection on a cross from Tom Evans before Craig Deakins' shot was saved on the line by Tardif.
Walsall Wood will now travel to Guernsey for the replay next Saturday night (7.45pm) as the island's rugby team have a home match at the Footes Lane ground that they share on the afternoon.
The semi-final draw will be made live on talkSPORT on Monday at 3pm.
* Our other team in the competition, Gornal Athletic, went down 3-1 away to Spennymoor Town.
