Walsall Wood wrap up season in style to confirm sixth spot
Walsall Wood finished the season with a comfortable win over relegated Rocester, confirming them in sixth place in their first ever Midland Alliance season.
Wood started positively but after just three minutes the Romans nearly went ahead. A knock-down in the box by David Shaw fell to Liam Shaw, but his first-time effort comfortably held by keeper Raajan Gill.
It took Wood just six minutes to go ahead. Andre Gonzales raced clear wide on the right and his low ball across the box was swept home at the far post by Craig Hancox.
Rocester's reply was almost immediate and it was the Shaws involved again, Liam powering in a header that was somehow kept out by Gill. David was first to react, getting in another header that Gill saved superbly. Two minutes later Paul Whalley's through ball was met by Liam Shaw to fire a first-time effort wide.
Back came Wood, a ball into the box by Hancox was nodded down by Joey Butlin but was stabbed across the box to Lee Stretton who fired over from 10 yards.
Wood lost possession on halfway after 23 minutes, David Shaw running clear but firing wide. Two minutes later a central free-kick found Daniel Wain on the edge of the box and his low drive was well held by Gill. On 27 minutes Wood again lost the ball on halfway, Liam Shaw's high lob collected at full stretch under his bar by Gill.
Danny Rock then made space wide left, cut inside and his diagonal ball into the right of the box saw keeper Richard Froggatt saving bravely at the feet of Craig Deakin.
The last chance of the half saw the Wood defence gift the ball to Whalley just outside the box, but he fired high over.
In the 55th minute, a long ball forward was played back to keeper Froggatt who sliced his clearance five yards to his left for Deakin to collect the ball, round the keeper and calmly make it 2-0.
Three minutes later Drew Aiton fed Butlin to race into the left of the box. Carl Allen forced him outside but he reached the byeline and his driven cross was inches away from being No.3.
On 66 minutes Aaron Dillon fired in a free-kick from wide right, Gill saving just under the bar under pressure from Liam Shaw.
Three minutes later Aiton raced on to a through ball, Froggatt making a full length save. Butlin was first to the loose ball but his first-time effort was blocked by Froggatt and a defender for a left-wing corner. Butlin's flag-kick flew across the face of goal without anyone able to supply the final touch.
After 83 minutes, a lovely left-wing one- touch move ended with Aiton racing into the box and hitting a cross shot over the far angle.
Aiton ran on to a ball on the right, Froggatt racing from his area to make a superbly timed sliding tackle. The last action of the 2013-14 season saw Butlin fire in a 25-yard central free-kick, Froggatt clawing the ball out of his top right-hand corner.
