Walsall Wood set sights high
Two goals in the last two minutes gave the scoreline a more realistic look as Walsall Wood made it five wins out of five games this season against Star.
The victory moves them up to seventh in the Midland Alliance, their highest ever position in their first season at level five.
Wood almost went ahead on 23 minutes. Persistence by Joey Butlin on the right edge of the box saw him cleverly lay the ball off to Harry Harris, and his low drive was pushed round his left-hand post by keeper Jordan Ellis.
The corner was only cleared to Max Black on the edge of the box to shoot first time, but the ball bounced to safety off the post with Ellis comprehensively beaten.
The keeper was beaten again shortly afterwards and this time Wood went in front.
Butlin collected a ball on the right edge of the box before hitting a dipping drive over the poorly positioned Ellis.
However, it was not until two minutes from time that Butlin added the visitors' second when he ran on to a pass from Anthony Juxon to fire into the corner of the net.
Then right on time, a lovely ball inside the box from Danny Rock saw Black neatly sidestep his marker before drilling the ball low into the net.
The scoreline by no means flattered Wood, but for a 10-minute spell in the second half Star nearly made them pay dearly for a host of missed chances in the first hour, with Jamie Clews and Aaron Garvey both coming close to equalising.
