Aston Villa star in advanced talks for £35m sale to Manchester United - with left-back update

The Belgian midfielder has been at Villa for three years.

Villa star Youri Tielemans is set to sign for Manchester United in a £35million deal.

The midfielder has been a star and consistent performer for Unai Emery’s Europa League winners, but has entered the final two years of his current contract.

And Manchester United have triggered a release clause for the 29-year-old, understood to be worth £35m.

Villa were not in a rush to lose Tielemans and had offered the influential midfielder fresh terms.

But the move is now at an advanced stage, with Tielemans set for an Old Trafford medical on Tuesday.

Tielemans had been in north America, where he played a leading role in Belgium’s World Cup run to the quarter-final, prior to Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Spain.

His nation were dealt a blow, however, when the midfielder picked up an injury in the warm-up of the last eight clash.

A Villa Park exit brings to an end three seasons for the former Leicester man.

Tielemans, a free transfer in 2023, clocked up 134 appearances for Villa and scored 10 goals - the last of which was a brilliant opener in the emphatic Europa League triumph over Freiburg.

He spent time sidelined with calf and ankle injuries last season.

The imminent exit continues the summer midfield shake-up to Emery’s squad, with Villa to be without the injured Amadou Onana for an extended period.

Onana could face up to nine months on the sidelines due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury picked up at the World Cup.

Villa, meanwhile, are closing in on the club-record buy of Switzerland attacking midfielder Johan Manzambi.

The club have hijacked Newcastle United’s move for the talented Swiss attacker, 20, and a deal worth almost £60m is in the works.

There is also understood to be interest from French giants PSG in left-back Lucas Digne.

The French World Cup left-back is on the radar of the back-to-back Champions League winners, who could formalise their interest.

Digne’s release clause is believed to be worth less than £10m.
