Wesley reveals his Aston Villa injury nightmare
Villa’s record buy Wesley has described breaking down in tears after learning the extent of the injury which ended his debut Premier League season.
The £22million striker saw his campaign curtailed by torn knee ligaments sustained in the 2-1 New Year’s Day win at Burnley. Wesley, who scored five times in the top flight for Villa following a big money switch from Club Brugge, is now on the road to recovery back home in his native Brazil.
But he admits the days immediately after suffering the injury, when he underwent surgery, were particularly tough.
Wesley told Brazilian website globo esporte: “I didn’t even want to know the severity. I was having a good time, scoring goals, I didn’t want to know at that time.
“The doctor explained to me that I broke my ligaments. I kept crying every day, worried I would even play again. But my family supported me.”
Though the Premier League campaign is set to be extended because of the coronavirus, Wesley cannot return for Villa until next season – whenever that might be – after being removed from the club’s official top-flight squad.
His injury was sustained following a strong challenge by Burnley defender Ben Mee. Wesley revealed the Clarets centre-back had attempted to get in touch since to apologise.
“He (Mee) did text me but I never actually received it!” he explained. “I had changed the number and couldn’t see the message.”
