The 44-year-old, who once worked at Blues as No.2 to then manager Chris Hughton, has been interviewed for the post along with several other candidates as the club look for the right man.

Axed by Cardiff after less than five months in the role, Trollope retains a good reputation as a coach and has worked under Chris Coleman in the Wales national team set-up.

Bruce has been working without an assistant since joining Villa last month and hopeful of getting someone in sooner rather than later. Yet while the manager is involved in the recruitment process, the club are keen for the assistant manager to be their own appointment.

Stephen Clemence joined as first-team coach on the same day Bruce was appointed, while Gary Walsh moved from Hull City to become the club's new goalkeeping coach earlier this month.

Villa, unbeaten in five games under the new boss, return to action tomorrow when they head to high-flying Brighton.

Players who have been away on international duty were expected back at Bodymoor Heath today, though Bruce has already stated Australian midfielder Mile Jedinak will not be available for the trip to the Amex Stadium, having played in Thailand on Tuesday.
