The Scot is tipped to succeed Gérard Houllier at Villa Park, although Villa have yet to make an official approach.

Peter Pannu, Birmingham's acting chairman, and senior management at the club are still reeling from McLeish's decision to resign via email 24 hours earlier.

Pannu called the former Scotland manager's actions "irresponsible" and says he will refuse to accept the resignation.

Villa fans have also voiced their disapproval, setting up online social network groups to protest against the likely switch.

More than 1,500 people voted in an E&S poll on the Villa manager options, with David Moyes leading the field on 39%, followed by Frank Rijkaard on 17% and Rafa Benitez on 14%. McLeish's name did not figure in the reckoning at the time.
