The Foxes were plunged into the relegation dogfight after being hit with the penalty earlier this month for breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules.

But it has now been confirmed they are appealing the ruling in an effort to get the sanction reduced.

At the same time, the Premier League is also appealing the independent commission’s verdict, believing Leicester should also have been sanctioned for late submission of its accounts.

It is believed the Premier League want the Foxes to have a further one-point deduction.

The appeal decision could have major ramifications for the Baggies, who sit just two points above the Foxes in the Championship table, one place outside the relegation zone.

A Premier League statement read: “The parties submitted their appeals to the Chair of the Judicial Panel, who will now appoint an Appeal Board to hear the case.

“To provide certainty for all clubs and fans, the Premier League will be seeking to have the appeal resolved urgently, and in any event before the end of the EFL season.”

Albion, who have taken just three points from their last eight Championship matches, host leaders Coventry on Saturday at the start of a pivotal week for head coach Eric Ramsay, who is still seeking his first win since taking charge last month.

The Baggies then host fellow strugglers Charlton on Tuesday night, before travelling to face Oxford on Saturday week.
