Impressive Joe Fraser rebounds from fall to reach world high bar final
Midlands gymnastics hero Joe Fraser is firmly in the medal hunt after qualifying for the high bar final at the world championships.
The 26-year-old will contest Saturday’s final after finishing second in the qualifying standings in Jakarta.
Fraser shook off the disappointment of an earlier fall on the parallel bars, his strongest piece of apparatus, to score 14.533 on the high bar thanks to a dazzling routine.
The former Sandwell College student is targeting the third world championship medal of his career having previously won gold on the parallel bars in 2019 and then claiming bronze in the team event three years later.
With no team event at this year’s championships, the first after the Paris Olympics, the GB team has placed its focus on individual apparatus with four other members of the squad reaching finals.
Jake Jarman, who won bronze on the floor in Paris 14 months ago, topped the qualifying standings for that event in Jakarta with triple European champion Luke Whitehouse also making it through.
Debutante Alex Yolshin- Cash impressed to reach the pommel horse final, with Harry Hepworth reaching the rings final. His GB team-mate Courtney Tulloch is first reserve.
The apparatus finals for both men and women will be spread across Friday and Saturday and screened live on BBC Two.
Fraser’s high bar final is scheduled to be the final event of the entire championships, taking place late on Saturday morning UK time.
