The 32-year-old will replace countryman Tom Latham, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Young, who plays first-class cricket for Central Districts in his homeland, has previously played in the Championship for Durham, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.

He has scored more than 8,000 first-class career runs, at an average of more than 40.

The Bears, who sit fourth in the First Division, visit leaders Surrey on September 8. They also face Essex and Nottinghamshire in the season’s closing weeks.

Performance director James Thomas said: “Will is a fantastic addition to our squad for the final three Championship matches.

“With two of those games against teams above us in the table, it’s a great chance to push hard in the title race.

“While it’s disappointing to lose Tom for the rest of the season, we know the qualities Will brings — his international pedigree, consistency in English conditions, and experience in the top order.

“We’re confident he’ll make a real impact as we look to finish the campaign strongly and challenge the leading teams.”
