Chelsea sack Roberto Di Matteo after Champions League defeat

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was reportedly being lined up to replace Roberto Di Matteo today after Chelsea axed the former West Brom boss.

The ex-Hawthorns head coach was sacked today after last night's 3-0 defeat at Juventus left the Champions League holders on the brink of elimination from this season's competition.

And sources close to Benitez have revealed that the Spaniard has been sounded out about a possible short-term role with the reigning European champions.

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant has also reportedly been contacted about taking over from Di Matteo, while current Albion head coach and former Chelsea assistant Steve Clarke was today quoted by bookmakers at 12/1 for an unlikely return to Stamford Bridge.

The Italian's departure sparked strong suggestions that Benitez could be handed the job for the rest of the season with owner Roman Abramovich still keen to lure ex-Barcelona chief Pep Guardiola in the longer-term.

However, Jose Mourinho is certain to be linked with a return after a former Real Madrid president claimed the Portuguese will leave the Spanish capital in the summer. Ramon Calderon said: "I think he has already decided to leave.

"He's a bit fed up with what's happening here and some people are fed up with his attitude and his behaviour. It is my opinion that he will leave at the end of this season."

Former Chelsea and Villa striker Tony Cascarino said: "I think that Rafa Benitez will be the man brought in to replace Roberto on a short-term basis until the end of the season.

"After that, who knows? It could be Pep Guardiola or even a return for Jose Mourinho. Benitez would steady the ship and at least make sure the club are on an even keel."

Odds for next permanent manager: Rafa Benitez 4/6, Pep Guardiola 3/1, Harry Redknapp 5/1, Avram Grant 12/1, Steve Clarke 12/1, Jose Mourinho 25/1, David Moyes 25/1 (Skybet).
