England given a grim warning

One of European football's top stars has warned England to prepare for an opening-game thrashing against France on Monday.
Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta believes France have the potential to make England "suffer" in their first group game of Euro 2012. The Barcelona star's warning comes amid more worries for manager Roy Hodgson in his trouble-strewn build-up to the tournament.
Nine players withdrew from yesterday's open training session, with Theo Walcott, Joleon Lescott, Glen Johnson, Scott Parker, James Milner and Joe Hart first to plod from the session before John Terry, Ashley Cole followed and Steven Gerrard joined them.
This at a time when Jermain Defoe's preparations have been shattered by the death of his father – the Spurs man was due to rejoin the squad later today following a hurried flight home to be with his family – as Wayne Rooney remains marooned by suspension. It has all brought turmoil to Hodgson's preparations.
And English confidence will not be helped by Iniesta's verdict on the opening clash against Laurent Blanc's French team, unbeaten in 21 internationals.
The 28-year-old believes the improvement in France's performances is in marked contrast to the shambolic nature of England's build-up.
"I have watched France on television several times and I think they are going to make England suffer," said Iniesta.
"The French have improved under Laurent Blanc and the connection between Yohan Cabaye, Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema is a very dangerous one.
"A few months ago I had my doubts. But now I believe France are better than England. England have changed their coach and system. They've also suffered some important blows off the pitch and that's a pity, as this is such a key game for them."
England will be without Rooney, who completes the first of a two-game suspension, and Iniesta believes his absence carries an impact on England's chances of making it out of the group.
"Wayne Rooney will be missed for both his goals and his work-rate," Iniesta said.
"In normal circumstances, England and France would pass through to the quarter-finals. But the first match can change the course of the group."
