VILLA

New Villa boss Alex McLeish is keen to make Newcastle full-back Danny Simpson his first signing.

McLeish has sounded out Nigel Reo-Coker about making a shock return to Villa Park after the 27-year-old midfielder was released by the club at the end of last season.

McLeish is reluctant to sell Stewart Downing but that will not prevent Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish from pursuing the player.

McLeish has admitted he is resigned to losing Ashley Young over the summer.

McLeish wants to take his former Birmingham City keeper Ben Foster to Villa Park, but he will turn his attention to Shay Given if that particular move fails. Given, of course, is said to be an Albion target.

ALBION

Midfielder Derek Boateng has arrived in England to finalise a move to The Hawthorns.

Roy Hodgson is said to be prepared to offer £3million for Birmingham City's Liam Ridgewell.

Albion are to have further talks with Fulham's Zoltan Gera about a possible return to the club.

WOLVES

Wolves are closely monitoring the form of 19-year-old Fulham striker Richard Peniket, a product of the Walsall youth system.
