Walsall boss Chris Hutchings has dismissed speculation linking the club with free agent Jamie Cureton and insisted the striker is not on his hit-list.

The released Norwich forward, available on a free transfer, was interested in a switch to the Banks's Stadium.

Cureton claimed his agent had offered him to the Saddlers but boss Hutchings categorically rejected suggestions the 34-year-old is on his summer wish-list.

The manager said: "I don't know where it's come from, it's not come from me.

"He could be putting that in the paper, I haven't spoken to Jamie Cureton or his agent.

"He's not on my list, no."

The Saddlers boss may not even sign another striker, as other positions could become a priority depending on which of the eight out-of-contract players stay at the club.

He said: "I could go for another striker but you have to prioritise and see what's available. There might be something in another position we have to go for, as much as I'd like another striker.

"We have to wait and see how things develop."

Darren Byfield and Troy Deeney are tied to the Saddlers next season and the manager is waiting on fellow frontmen Alex Nicholls and Will Grigg to commit to the club.

Hutchings expects 18-year-old Grigg to perform next season, after failing to make an appearance last campaign.

The Walsall boss said: "Will has come through and has to develop now. He can't be just a substitute or a squad player, he's got to look to put the lads under pressure.

"Byfield, Deeney and if Nicholls signs he's another one Will must look to put under pressure."

Hutchings has seen his squad for maintenance training this week and has been impressed with their efforts, just 20 days after the end of last season.

He said: "There's a good turnout, most of the boys have been there and it's been a good workout.

"We're only working to 75 per cent, it's not a do or die thing, it's a maintenance week where they're trying to tick over.

"They've had some time off, they've come back for this week and they'll have another three or four weeks off before pre-season."
