New recruit Ben Foster has insisted Birmingham can become Second City top dogs and qualify for Europe next season.

The England international completed his £6million move from Manchester United to Blues earlier this week in a clear statement of intent from Blues, who have also been linked with established Premier League stars like Carlton Cole, Paul Konchesky, Bobby Zamora and Charles N'Zogbia.

But Villa find themselves fighting to keep hold of crown jewel James Milner with Manchester City believed to be plotting an improved offer, after seeing their initial £20million bid knocked back.

And Foster believes Blues are capable of leapfrogging their big rivals next term.

He said: "Can we challenge Villa to be the city's top club next season? Of course we can. We've got to aim at pushing for the European places now.

"I'm not too bothered where Villa finish, we just need to focus on our position and take each game as it comes and go from there.

"I see no reason why we can't finish above them."

Leamington-born Foster also rubbished rumours his relationship with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had soured after ending the season third choice at Old Trafford.

He said: "I read quite a few things about us having a massive 'barney' after the Sunderland game but a 'barney' involves two people talking. It was mainly just one!

"It was definitely not strained, he has been fantastic with me and I read some nice things he said about me the other day which is great to hear. You never have to say anything about a player when he leaves your club.

"I got on really well with him right until the end."
