Walsall defender Clayton McDonald has tipped the team to shine next season because they have proved they can mix it with the best.

The Saddlers sit 12th in League One but are eyeing 10th spot – a place occupied by Milton Keynes Dons who visit the Banks's Stadium on the last day of the season.

They have taken points off all of the top six this season and McDonald believes it confirms the squad's ability.

He said: "We've shown people what we're capable of and what we can do next season.

"You look around and it's not like it's an old team, it's a young team and everyone is willing to learn and listen.

"We've had glimpses all season of what we can do. There are a lot of young faces in the team and we can only get better.

"We're looking up and want to kick on."

Saturday's impressive 1-1 draw at Swindon made it just one defeat in five games and McDonald has targeted three wins from the final three games with Hartlepool, Carlisle and the Dons.

He said: "We want to have a good end to the season so we have something to build on for the next. The aim is to win the last three games. We want to do well for each other and the fans.

"We want to win every game, we're not going in with half measures. We're all passionate people, we argue a lot because we believe we can do better.

"It's a great thing, you want to improve, it's not people having a go, its people telling you where you can get better."

The 21-year-old has earned plaudits in his first senior season after making his loan move permanent from Manchester City in January, but refuses to get carried away.

He said: "I feel like I'm doing OK but I'm not going to blow my own trumpet, I'm just going to get my head down and hopefully it works."
