Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin has insisted the gutsy 1-0 win over Colchester proves the squad are united and striker Troy Deeney's public blast has been forgotten.

The keeper believes the Saddlers have stuck together, after Deeney's criticism that some of his his team-mates lacked commitment.

Gilmartin believes Saturday's 10-man victory over their promotion-chasing opponents was the perfect tonic for a turbulent week.

He said: "Troy and I had a conversation about it, we get on well and there's no problems there and there were no problems at all this week. In my opinion, everyone has their own standards and wants to win, you don't need someone to come in the press and say their displeasure about how we are doing, I think every player has that.

"When you're losing games you're never happy. We've put that Troy Deeney interview to bed, because we won today and we want to kick on for the rest of the season."

Gilmartin reckons Mark Hughes was unfortunate to be sent off and believes the captain a victim of referees clamping down after a series of high profile injuries.

He said: "You see these bad broken legs in the paper and it's obvious to see the referees are really looking at every tackle, as if they're about to pull out the red card and make a statement."
