Two to blame for Walsall manager
Furious Walsall chief Chris Hutchings insisted Rene Gilmartin and Jamie Vincent were "both to blame" for the goal which gifted Millwall a route back into the game.
Furious Walsall chief Chris Hutchings insisted Rene Gilmartin and Jamie Vincent were "both to blame" for the goal which gifted Millwall a route back into the game.
Having led 2-0 courtesy of goals from Alex Nicholls and Richard Taundry, the Saddlers looked to be cruising to their first win in three on Saturday.
But an embarrassing mix-up between goialkeeper Gilmartin and skipper Vincent handed Steve Morison a simple chance to halve the deficit and Alan Dunne completed the comeback with a 93rd-minute goal to salvage a 2-2 draw at the Banks's Stadium.
A fuming Hutchings felt both Gilmartin and Vincent had to take their share of the blame.
He said: "I think they were both to blame and I'm obviously not too happy about the situation. We scored two excellent goals to put us in a good position. It was always going to be difficult on the pitch and it was always going to be a mistake that let them into the game.
"You make a mistake and you get punished for it. We should be going in 2-0 up – end of story. Obviously they've got something to hang onto then and get back into the game.
"It's hard to take. If you look at the way they were celebrating at the end it was as if they'd won."
Hutchings had "no qualms" with Matt Richards' red card in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Millwall.
Richards received his marching orders for two bookable offences – the first for high feet and the second for a clumsy tackle on Chris Hackett.
The manager said: "I have no qualms about the sending off – they were two bookable offences – but we just couldn't hang on. For the first one Matty in fairness did have his eye on the ball but his foot was high. The second one is a foul, I don't think there are any real arguments.
"To go down to 10 men it was very difficult to hold on. We tried to put fresh legs on but we just didn't hold out.
"We had to defend well – and I thought we did that. We know they're going to get balls into the box because having the extra man it's going to be difficult to stop."
