Byfield's promise for crunch month
Walsall striker Darren Byfield has promised the team won't let their season die but admits the next month will define the campaign.
Walsall striker Darren Byfield has promised the team won't let their season die but admits the next month will define the campaign.
The Saddlers are without a fixture on Saturday, but welcome title chasing Norwich on Tuesday ahead of nine games in 29 days.
Trips to Gillingham, Bristol Rovers and Leeds coupled with home ties with Charlton and Brentford represent a daunting challenge for Chris Hutchings' men in February.
Byfield reckons they are confident of maintaining their charge for the play-offs.
The veteran forward said: "It is season defining, after these games we know what we're going for and will know where we're going to be.
"Whether it will be mid-table, fighting relegation or going for the play-off's, but I think we'll be at the top end giving it a good push. We won't be down the bottom half."
The Saddlers have two games in hand on some of their rivals but sit 10 points adrift of League One's top six in 11th.
But Byfield believes they cannot let the gap get to them.
He said: "I've heard people say before they'd rather have the points than the games. While we weren't playing the gap was only one point, then three, then seven and now it's 10 but we can't look at it.
"You can get yourself into a bit of trouble when you're chasing the pack."
